Under The Paint
by James E. Michels
Under The Paint mixes domestic crime tension with a heavier dose of spice than a traditional thriller. It follows a trio of characters moving toward collision, balancing relationship heat with the pull of wanting to know exactly how everything ends.
The review
This was a different lane for me, and that made it interesting.
I do not usually reach for spicy thrillers, so Under The Paint felt like stepping slightly outside my default comfort zone. But the combination of domestic-crime tension and romantic heat gave the book its own identity.
It is definitely a slow burn, but I stayed invested because I wanted to see how the trio of main characters would finally converge. That sense of collision is what kept the pages turning.
I also appreciated that the storyline feels wrapped up by the end while still leaving room for these characters to intersect again later. That is a nice balance, especially in a book leaning this hard into relationship dynamics.
If you want a thriller with more spice than usual and do not mind a slower build getting there, this is a worthwhile detour from the standard suspense stack.
